The electrical load on a police cruiser is considerably more than the standard car it is derived from. Up to a certain point it is possible to use the cars regular battery to power this equipment on the assumption that for most of the time that the car is in use the engine will be on and the alternator making power. Fitting the
low voltage disconnect
is a sort of insurance policy that the car will always be able to start. All the ancillary equipment is powered through the low voltage disconnect and it cuts off the extra loads when the battery gets low.
If the extra loads become too great then it would be better to install a second battery for the ancillary loads. In that case an
Automatic Charge Relay
(or ACR) would be used to combine all the batteries when the engine is running so they all get charged, but separate the two batteries when the engine is stopped so the extra loads cannot run down the start battery.
