In multi-battery installations the purpose of the Automatic Charge Relay (ACR) is to combine the various batteries for charging but to seperate them when they are not on charge.
All the batteries get charged at once but when the charge source is removed and the batteries are loaded up they operate independently.
The ACR is a voltage sensitive relay that closes when the voltage is above a certain setpoint and opens when the voltage falls below another setpoint. A time delay is built in to prevent chatter.
The larger ACR's shown below are available in 12 or 24 volts and the smaller model works on either voltage. The larger ones all come with remote switching and a manual override knob is optional.
As well as marine and RV use these are commonly used on any vehicle that has multi-battery installations such as Fire and Emergency vehicles, mobile command and control centers etc.
Blue Sea Systems ACR's can also be used in conjunction with their Remote Battery Switches to provide a complete remote switching and combining system.
