Alternator technology has been around for a long time and alternators can be repaired anywhere.  Even in the most remote corners of the world it should be possible to find somebody capable of rebuilding an alternator if the parts are available.  For the serious world traveller carrying a spares kit for your alternator is an excellent idea.
