Pro Installer bus bars are designed for flexibility and scalability. The snap-out side skirts allow for additional cable entry, and radius ends improve cable routing options. it is easy to link other Pro Installer products to the bus bars because of the common interconnection height in the product line.

Purpose

These busbars are intended to gather multiple wires together and connect them to a single source. They typically get used for the negative connections in DC Systems. Because of their high amp capacity they get used where there are big loads or power sources present such as inverter chargers, windlasses, big alternators, bow thrusters, winches and any other big DC electric system components.

Allowable voltage and current ratings

The ratings vary by device but are typically in the range of 550-650 amps DC and up to 48 volts DC. Many of these busbars have an AC rating also but they rarely if ever get used in this capacity.

Covers

The BEP models come with covers included and for the Blue Sea 2104 the cover is an optional extra. There is no cover available for the Blue Sea 2107

Features

The BEP Models are all the same height and their height matches other items in the BEP pro electrical installer range. This allows them to be connected to each other by joiner bars. The Blue Sea Systems models do not have this feature.

What circuit protection is needed?

Normally these are used on the negative side of the circuit and so there isn't a specific circuit breaker used for the busbar. However they are part of a circuit and so the circuit protection for the entire circuit must match the rating of the smallest item in the circuit.

Are these units waterproof?

These are just open busbars so they are not waterproof and neither are their covers

What amperage to pick?

Busbars must be sized for the largest item in the system

How many connection terminals are available?

The number of connection points available varies from three for the smallest of this group to eight for the largest one. The Blue Sea models also have small screw terminals at each end for small wires.

How many cables can connect to each terminal?

ABYC permits up to four cables per terminal, however because these are heavy duty busbars that will be using heavy cable its unlikely there will be room for more that two cables per terminal in most cases, and even then they would probably need to come from opposite sides.

How can I optimize current flow in these busbars?

The performance of a busbar can be increased by attaching the primary feed wire to the center of the busbar. The performance can be further increased by first attaching the primary feed wire followed by the highest load wire to the same terminal. This will allow the current to be carried by the large cables and avoid sending all of the current through the busbar. Although this will improve the performance of the busbar, it does not change the actual ampacity rating of the busbar and should not be used when comparing one busbar to another.

How can I increase voltage capacity in these busbars?

Increasing the creepage distance, which is the distance from a busbar mounting fastener to a grounded surface like a firewall. Creepage distance directly impacts the voltage rating of the busbar. Insulating the base and using insulating fasteners rather than conductive fasteners will significantly increase the safe operating voltage of a bus bar. The insulating system including the creepage distance has to prevent failure in the event of transients and surges in voltage.
