Questions & Answers
The Balmar Max Charge MC-612-DUAL is designed for use in single engine / dual alternator applications where both alternators are being used to charge the same large battery bank. The MC-612-DUAL provides two field output connectors, two power input connectors and two system ground connections, making it possible to use two standard wiring harnesses when connecting to two alternators.
Intelligent multi-stage regulation.
Now Includes LiFePo4 Lithium Ion
Digital numeric LED display.
Epoxy encapsulated circuitry.
Includes
two
54 inch wiring harnesses.
Intended to be used to drive twin alternator installations on the same engine.
For use with P-type externally regulated alternators
Dash lamp and auxiliary lamp terminals
Magnetic programming tool included
Optional dual alternator and battery temperature sensors sold separately
Because this regulator is intended for charging large battery banks the full compliment of temperature sensors is highly recommended.

Q:
What voltage rate should gel batteries be charged? I have 2 deep cycle group 31 batteries and a group 27 starting battery. I just replaced all 3 batteries and isolated the starting battery, started the engine and the volt meter re ad 15 volts. I immediately shut the engine. When i started the engine on the 2 group 31 house bateries or on the all setting the voltage meter went to 14.3 volts at first and the dropped to 14 volts. my balmar mc612 regulator is 10 years old. Is the starting battery bad or do i need a new balmar regulator? Thank you in advance for your answers.

A:
The maximum for gel batteries is 14.1 volts. That can be temperature compensated, so when they are colder then normal it can be a bit more and when they are warmer it needs to be lower. Gel batteries are sensitive to overcharging so you need to get this right. If something isn’t working correctly the first suspect is always the temperature sensors, if you have these fitted disconnect them and try it again. The next suspect is that the voltage sense wire of the regulator may not be sensing the actual voltage, maybe because it is sensing from a battery that is not the one that is being charged, or maybe because of a bad connection. You can use the display on the regulator to troubleshoot,

Q:
I have a Catamaran with Yanmar mains. On the port side the main has two alternators; one which goes to the starting battery and one higher amp that goes to the house bank(this alternator will need replaced with one that can be regulated) . I'm considering going to lithium for my house bank and have been researching you regulators as a way to limit alternator output to the new lithium house bank via temperature sensors. I don't think there is an issue with this function. Can I use this regulator and a battery isolator together so if the BMS on the lithium house bank shuts the house bank off I don't ruin the house alternator from a voltage or current spike? I see a ton of post of using a single alternator running through a dc to dc charger but I think your regulators will allow me to charge at a higher rate and protect the alternator if I get the setup correct. Thanks for your input. Doug
