The switch is not a circuit breaker. ABYC Standards require that a double pole circuit breaker be installed within 10 feet of the shore power inlet, ahead of this switch. The measurement is made along the conductors.
This switch is for two 120 Volt AC sources and one 120/240 Volt source and switches the hot and neutral lines. The ground wire is never switched.
The switch itself is designed to be mounted in a thin sheet. The maximum thickness of the sheet that can be used is 4mm (0.16") because the center pin for the knob is not long enough to allow the switch to be mounted in anything thicker. You can however purchase this same switch pre-mounted in a panel which makes it much easier to install. The
is a conventional flat panel and the
is one of the 360-Series panels. Both feature indicator lights for "power available" and "reverse polarity" and come with a set of stick on labels.
The Purpose of the AC Source Selector Switch
Alternating Current (AC) power changes polarity 60 times per second in the US and 50 times per second in Europe. This is the frequency of the power and is referred to as Hertz. Because of this alternating nature of AC power, two live sources of AC power, such as shore power and inverter power, or shore power and a generator, cannot be electrically connected. The AC Source Selector Switch is designed to connect two sources of AC power to a common circuit while preventing both sources from being connected to the circuit simultaneously.
