Questions & Answers
DC-DC Converters are used to step up or step down DC Voltages. This model is programmable and so can be used in a variety of ways. It was specially developed for use in motor vehicles with the purpose of regulating the charge from the vehicles alternator to an auxiliary battery. In particular it was designed for use with the type of smart alternators and dynamos used on vehicles such as the Sprinter Van where the output voltage can vary dramatically. To avoid interfering with the vehicles electronics, which might cause warranty issues, the buck boost converter can be programmed to use its built in vibration sensor to only operate when the engine is running. The output produced by the converter can be regulated to suit the requirements of the auxiliary battery system, and in the case of Lithium batteries it can prevent excessive load on the alternator by limiting how much charge is available for the Lithium battery. This sophisticated device is a clever workaround to all kinds of difficult problems that can be encountered when making modifications to these vehicles.
For charging a 12V or 24V house battery in vehicles with a smart alternator (regenerative braking, Euro 5 and Euro 6 engines)
Charges the auxiliary battery with a pre-set charge voltage, eliminating high voltages (e.g. Mercedes: 15,4V) and low voltages.
Programmable on-off can be from a built in vibration sensor or a programmable input (D+, CAN bus or (+)15 connection
The converter can be fully programmed by means of a simple and user-friendly PC application. (USB cable needed)
The converter can be programmed to charge a 12 V or a 24 V auxiliary battery from either a 12V or a 24V alternator and starter battery.

I want to use this in my 2018 Sprinter V6 Cargo van. I have 2 300ah lithium house batteries and a Renogy 3000w inverter/charger that needs to be set at AGM2. Will your dcdc charger work with this setup?

A:
In this scenario you would use the Buck Boost to charge your Lithium Battery from the start battery, you would set it up to only run when the engine is running and you would program it to charge at whatever voltage your battery manufacturer recommends. You can limit the current flow in the programming meun, this is to avoid overtaxing your alternator. The maximum current limit with this model is 50 Amps. Its a very elegant solution to a problem that many people have to wrestle with. Unfortunately it is a bit expensive, but when you see the level of sophistication and the programming options you will understand why it is priced the way it is.

What is the advantage of this Victron Buck - Boost DC-DC product ( other than $300 difference ) vs the new 2020 Spring released 30 amp Orion 30 Amp? I want to have a reliable DC-DC charger from my Diesel Ford 6.7 to the Trailer batteries. Now are stock flooded but future AGM or Lithiums. Airstream 25 ft trailer with stock batteries and 3 stage 1000 watt system. I will upgrade later to the 3000 Victron. I need to start somewhere and I do not own a PC only iphone and macs. A:
Good question. The first obvious answer is that as of February 2020 the Smart DC DC Charger 12/12-30 is not yet available and the Buck Boost is. Here are the main functional differences between them:
This Buck Boost can go up to 50 Amps output but the Smart DC DC Charger is limited to 30 Amps output.
The Orion Smart DC DC Charger has options for a two stage charge with a settings for absorption and float voltage and a time setting for bulk, but the Buck Boost has a single output and no time out setting.
The Buck Boost has much more programming options for determining when it will turn on ( eg requiring two or more conditions to turn on) and how much current it will pass, the Orion just has an on-off switch.
You can set up the Buck Boost to work with minimal interference to the vehicle's wiring by programming it to use its vibration sensor to turn on.
Since the Orion Smart is a new product we haven't yet had the opportunity to play with it.

I have four Battle Born 12v/100aH batteries wired in parallel connected to a Victron 12/3000 MultiPlus in my camper. I want to use the Buck Boost to charge the batteries while towing. Where is the Buck Boost mounted (I have a '17 F-350 DRW w/6.7 diesel engine)? Is there an elegant solution to connect the truck to the camper? Anderson connectors appear to be the standard, but there's nothing I can find that works like the 7-pin connector that's on my truck. (An Anderson-like connection that's weather-proof and made to withstand a very high number of connect and disconnects.)

Wanted to confirm this is as basic as it sounds. I have a 2019 Mercedes Sprinter 2500 with 3 24v 50amphour lithium battle born auxillary batteries run in parallel (not connected to the vehicle). Can i hook this unit straight up to the positive and negative terminals of my vehicle battery and run directly back to my aux setup? Are there any other items required to safely charge my aux batteries and not damage my vehicle other than a circuit breaker? Thanks

Will a DC/DC charger charging LFP from FLA, provide inherent protection of an alternator's diodes from transient spikes due to a BMS/LFP shutdown? Will the DC/DC converter survive those spikes? How? Possible answer: Presumably in this case the alternator remains connected to the AGM/FLA battery bank, thereby protecting the alternator? Will the DC/DC converter suffer? -Probably not?
