Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is a technique used to get the maximum possible power from a solar panel. It is achieved by putting a variable load on the panel so that it achieves its optimum output voltage, and then converting that voltage to the optimum required by the battery. The effect of this can be to produce output up to 30% higher than a similar panel without this technology. This solar charge controller automatically adjusts for 12 or 24 volt systems.

One of the pictures above shows the programming interface on a PC. The MPPT controller needs to be connected to a PC using the VE USB Interface. In this example I am using one of the earlier 70/15 charge controllers. I turned off autodetect and set the battery nominal voltage to 12 volts so it would show the default settings for a 12 volt system. The absorption voltage default is 14.4V and the Float voltage is 13.8 V

By default autodetect is on so this controller automatically adjusts for 12 or 24 volt battery banks. In a 24 volt systems the absorption and float voltage defaults would be twice what is shown above. With the aid of this program you can set your own values on the computer and write them to the controller when you save and exit. The software is a free download from the Victron website.

Tech Tip

Connecting solar panels in series makes for a higher input voltage to the MPPT controller which gives it more to work with and greater efficiency. It also makes for less voltage drop in the wires. The first number of the model number is the maximum input voltage, the second number is the maximum amperage

Q: I want to hook up solar battery charging on my boat. I have room for three panels side by side mounted on the davits. I have located panels from Renology 100 watts 12v. Monocrystalline panels that would fit nicely for about $140 ea.. Ques. 1. How many volts are the panels likely to put out at peak sun? 2. How should they be connected?(It has been suggested that I hook them up in series and let the MPPT drop the voltage to 14 or whatever is appropriate). 3. What MPPT is needed here? What wire is used to hook all this up and what do the connectors look like? Please advise. Thank you.

A: This is the MPPT 75/10 The first number, 75, represents the maximum input voltage. The second number, 10, represents the maximum output current.
The maximum voltage your panel can produce is called the open circuit voltage. It may vary a bit from panel to panel but it should be listed in the specs or in the sticker on the back. For a nominal 12 volt panel that would normally be around 22 Volts. So you could put three of them in series and the total would be a max of 66 volts which would not exceed the 75 Volt input voltage of the controller. The controller will have more to work with if you put them in series and you can use smaller wires too, but you could also put them in parallel.
Next you have to look at the total power available, in this case 3 x 100 Watts = 300 Watts. When charging a 12 volt battery bank the nominal current (using the formula Watts = Volts X Amps) is 25 Amps which is too much for this MPPT75/10 controller which has a maximum current of 10 Amps. In this case using a Victron MPPT controller you need the 100/30
I would suggest you size the wires using the 3% voltage drop table if you can. You will find a copy of that on my blog pages. In this case the input wires will be smaller than the output wires because of the difference in voltage and current. Higher current and lower voltage on the output side, lower current and higher voltage on the input side.
These MPPT controllers dont have any power plugs, they are designed to accept the end a wire that is clamped when the screw is tightened down.

A: You dont need diodes. It is not possible for current to flow to the panels.

Q: Can this work with wind? If not, which product?

A: This is for Solar Only.

Wind turbines have different needs, they need to always have somewhere to send their load to, so wind controllers have to divert it to a dummy load. This isnt an issue with solar as its OK to shut off the output of a solar panel.

A: Yes, it will work very well for that purpose. You need to purchase one of the accessories to program it. Most people opt for the Bluetooth Dongle and then you get to program it on your phone.
