Purpose
Victron SmartShunts are an all-in-one battery monitor, only without a display. Your phone acts as the display. They are intelligent battery monitors and provide detailed information on voltage, state of charge, current and usage insights via the VictronConnect app. Compatible with any battery type, they are available in standard and IP-rated versions and in different amperages
Compatibility
The maximum DC voltage allowed is 70 volts so they are compatible with any battery system up to a nominal 48 volts.
Communication and programming
Programming and monitoring is primarily via the Victron Connect App which you can download for free to your phone or tablet. The SmartShunt can also be connected to a
Cerbo GX or
Ekrano GX and then its data can be viewed there or remotely via the Victron VRM remote management portal. The connection between the GX device and the SmartShunt requires a VE Direct cable.
Alternative options
The SmartShunt is a good alternative for a BMV battery monitor, especially for systems where battery monitoring is needed but less wiring and clutter is wanted. The differences between the SmartShunt and the
BMV 712 are as follows: The SmartShunt has no visual or audible alarm, and no programmable relay, and of course the SmartShunt has no screen.
Limitations
Because the SmartShunt has no screen its data has to be viewed either on your phone or on a GX Device. If you just view it on your phone you may not notice any alarms or low battery warnings until it is too late.
What circuit protection is needed?
The main cables of the SmartShunt go on the battery negative and do not require circuit protection. A small wire with fuse is provided to connect to battery positive
Two channel options
This is a two input device. The first input monitors everything about one battery bank including volts, amps and amp hours. A second channel is available for any one of the following uses:
Voltage reading of a second battery bank
Mid-point voltage reading
Is the unit waterproof?
The standard version is not at all waterproof. This IP65 versions are completely sealed from dust and have limited protection from jets of water. However the shunt and connections are fully exposed.
Can it be programmed for different types of batteries?
Yes it is user programmable, there are presets for different types of batteries our you can so totally custom programming.
What amperage to pick?
The 500 amp model is the default, the 300 amp model can work in smaller systems. The shunt needs to be sized for the largest current it will be expected to pass.
Installation requirements
The SmartShunt gets installed adjacent to the battery or battery bank it is monitoring. All the negative cable running to the battery need to pass through the shunt on their way to the battery. That means a heavy cable runs from the shunt to the battery, and all the negative cables that previously went to the battery need to connect downstream of the shunt. Then a small wire connects to battery positive to power the meter and measure voltage.
Why should I monitor my battery?
Batteries are used in a wide variety of applications, mostly to store energy for later use. But how much energy is stored in the battery? No one can tell by just looking at it. The service life of batteries depends on many factors. Battery life may be shortened by under-charging, over-charging, excessively deep discharges, excessive charge or discharge currents, and by high ambient temperature. Monitoring the battery with a battery monitor will give important feedback to the user so that remedial measures can be taken when necessary. Doing this will extend battery life and the battery monitor will quickly pay for itself.
The Victron Connect App
The VictronConnect app is essential to set up and monitor the battery monitor. The VictronConnect app can connect to the battery monitor via: Bluetooth, USB, using the optional VE.Direct to USB interface, Remotely via a GX device and the VRM portal. The VictronConnect app is available for the following platforms: Android, Apple iOS (Note that USB is not supported, it is only possible to connect via Bluetooth), MacOs, Windows .
