Hi The Victron video showing how not to blow up yor alternator does not at all represent the real world. I contacted Victron and asked for more details. Victron did answer any of my questions. If you look closely in the video you will see the name and brand of the alternator. So we called the producer of the alternator and showed them the video. This particular alternator is a 70 amp alternator. In the video you see it charges more than 70 amps. This is not possible at the very low RPM. We have delivered litihiumbatteries and alternator with internal voltageregulator to more than 1600 boats. No problems with stock alternators at all. We see once in a while, trouble with alternators that are pushed over the limit with external regulators. The alternators usually do not fail but have to be derated in order to work properly. External regulators do not protect the alternator. It pushes the alternator a lot harder. In order to save the alternator, sensors are used to protect it. DC DC chargers is not what you need. Why pay more to reduce charging? Use Victron Argofet or similar electronic batteryseparator instead. It is cheaper, less complicated and it works. You also get the most out of your alternator. We think that Victron burns an alternator in order to sell more DC DC chargers, that you do not need.

We spend a lot of time at PKYS helping people set up alternators to work with lithium batteries. We also get to speak to a lot of people that have melted their alternators due to various setup issues. In my experience there are three main ways to do this and only the first two are satisfactory :
