The SmartShunt and BMV 712 battery monitor settings should be adjusted when used with Lithium batteries.  This is to reflect the different characteristics and higher efficiency of Lithium when compared to other batteries.   Different battery manufacturers may have different recommendations but these are the ones we recommend for use with Victron Smart Lithium Batteries.

  • To start you need to set your battery capacity in amp hours.  This is the total of all the batteries that are in parallel and acting as one bank.
  • Then the charge voltage is changed from the default 13.5 volts to a higher setting of 14.1 volts.
  • The Discharge Floor is the next item on the list.  By default this is set to 50% because conventional batteries should not be discharged more than 50%.  The Discharge floor setting is used by the battery monitor to calculate the time to empty, but it really tells you the time to 50% empty.   Lithium batteries can be discharged much more.  Our recommendation is to set the discharge floor to 20%.  This is a compromise designed to increase the life of your batteries.
  • The tail current can stay at the default 4%, as can the charged detection time.
  • The Peukert exponent can be reset from the default 1.25 to 1.05
  • The charge efficiency factor can be changed from 95% to 99%
  • The other settings can stay at the default.

These settings are a good starting point.  Occasionally a bit of additional tweaking may be needed, especially in systems that only get charged from solar.
