Relays, Solenoids and Combiners
Automatic charge relays are used to distribute charge to multiple battery banks. They achieve this by combining the banks while under charge and separating when the charge is not available.
Solenoids are used as remote battery switches. These solenoids provide remotely operated high amp switching under load and some also feature a local manual override which can be used as a service lockout. Scroll down to the end of this section to see what the ABYC has to say about battery switches.

What the ABYC says about Battery Switches
11.6.1.2.1 A battery switch shall be installed in the positive conductor(s) from each battery or battery bank with a CCA rating greater than 800 amperes or 100 Ah if CCA is unavailable.
and
11.6.1.2.2 A battery switch shall be mounted in a readily accessible location as close as practicable to the battery.
On most larger boats the second of these two provisions is impossible unless remote switching is used. If a manual switch is used it either wont be close to the batteries or it won't be accessible. Below is a photo of a large remote switching and ACR setup on a large boat.
