This is the IP65 version of the 500 Amp SmartShunt.  If you are considering mounting a SmartShunt in a damp area like a bilge you need to get the IP65 Version because of its increased water resistance.  If your installation will be totally dry the standard version is fine and will save you some money.



Tech Tip

The IP65 rating describes the level of water resistance of this product.  The 6 says it is completely sealed and the 5 says it has limited protection from jets of water.   This doesn't mean you can stick it underwater and expect it to last very long.  It does have exposed high current carrying connections and if these become tarnished or corroded they may generate resistance and heat.  In addition the two little fuses are not water resistant, your battery terminals are not water resistant, and the VE Direct cable socket is not water resistant.  So just because you have the IP65 version doesn't mean you won't have to give some consideration about how to make this work in a damp area.
