The University of Maryland Energy Trailers were built to support research outside the classroom.
This student-led capstone project is studying whether electromagnetic fields from high voltage transmission lines affect solar power generation.
The question matters because utility-owned rights of way under transmission lines are often underutilized. If solar modules can perform well in those areas, it could open up more space for renewable energy generation.
With support from PKYS and Kelly & Sons Electrical Construction, the trailers use Victron Energy components to create mobile power systems that can be tested in the field.
It is a practical example of power technology supporting research, education, and new ways of thinking about solar.
