Is this an all in one unit? Connect solar and plug in grid and add some batteries and all is well kind of thing? Or does this need to still have a charge controller as well?

The Phoenix inverter is just an inverter, the MultiPlus is an inverter/charger with automatic transfer switch

Q:
Now in addition to using two of these to create split phase could another additional two units create a higher output split phase. If so does the appropriate size wire for each inverter terminate together in a AC panel. Curious in a diagram seeing how this would be wired.

Yes you can gang multiple units together like you describe, up to a maximum of five units in parallel. The
Manual for parallel and three phase systems
explains the process. The manual makes specific reference to AC wire size, it suggests you do not oversize it. The explanation is quite complicated and is to do with Ripple. For systems of this complexity we recommend you do the online training available on
Victron Professional
. Anyone can use Victron Professional but you have to make a login to access it. There is also a section about Parallel and 3 phase system in the online book
Wiring Unlimited
. Section 4.7 is on Parallel and/or 3 phase system DC wiring and Section 6.7 is on Special considerations for AC wiring of parallel and/or 3 phase inverter/chargers

I understand these can be hooked in parallel or split phase... but can they be do both at the same time? i.e. 2 units in parallel - combined in split phase mode with another 2 units that are paralleled? I'm needing to generate 50amp 240v split phase, but just using 2 of these in split phase won't be enough power... Thank you :)

So I just wanna be sure to these together can be configured for a split phase (120-0-120) 240 Volt output. I question this because in the manual for the one I already purchased only specifies these units being in “parallel” to increase output, and the diagram that they provide in the owners manual for this “parallel” output only shows one LINE NEUTRAL GROUND. Thanks
